Sound City Training Alumni: Jordan Hetherington

This month’s Sound City Launch Training alumni interview is with Spotify’s’ Jordan Hetherington. In partnership with CAPLL Ltd, Launch is designed to give artists and music executives with potential the skills and tools to establish themselves, grow their audience and fund their creative ideas and projects.

What were you doing before you embarked on Sound City Launch Training?

I had just got back to the UK after spending some time travelling around New Zealand and was all fired up ready to do all I could to land a music-related job. Prior to that, I was at University completing a Business & Management degree, trying my best to link assignments with my interest in the music biz.

What was the best thing you took away from Launch?

For me, I’d say the insight into what it’s actually like to work in the industry was the most beneficial thing. Hearing from and speaking with various professionals in all different parts of the industry was really interesting, and opened my eyes to the numerous career pathways that you can go down. The opportunity to network with like-minded people at different stages of their careers was also great. I still regularly speak to the people I met through the training and often reference the scheme when talking to industry professionals. I genuinely believe that the training helped me land my job at Spotify.

What are you up to now?

I’m currently working for Spotify as a Social Media Associate within their Global CS Ops Team. I work closely with the brand’s different marketing teams and partner agencies on Social Engagement campaigns such as Wrapped and Tips & Tricks, and also work alongside our Artist Support Team on the escalations side of things.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone at the start of their career in music, what would it be?

Talk to people and be genuine. Sounds like a cliche but being a nice person really does help. Try and get to as many events and industry conferences as possible too. Even at Sound City+, I was able to meet loads of people who didn’t have to give me any time, but did. You’d be surprised how many people will be happy to try and point you in the right direction of where you’re trying to go.
